Six Months!!!!!

Doodlebug turned 6 months old yesterday. We knew by Christmas time she would be 6 months but it's still so surreal that she's growing so fast. She's such a big girl already...she's eating solids, sitting up on her own, well on her way to crawling (much to mommy's dismay), drinking juice and soon to use a sippy cup. She's such a beautiful girl and I absolutely love watching her personality develop.

Yesterday marked another big milestone for us. I've been breastfeeding for 6 months!!! Now to some, that may not seem like a lot but it's HUGE for me. It's been a difficult journey from the start when I had to pump and supplement to get her weight back up, to taking Fenugreek to help boost my supply and most recently Reglan due to low supply issues again. In the beginning I would chart how much I pumped then once her weight was back up I'd chart how much she nursed...for every feeding.

Being able to breastfeed was a big deal and a big goal for me. I prayed about it all during the pregnancy and have continued to ask for God's assistance. I tried to be realistic with my goals. First to make it to 3 months as a mini goal and then 6 months as my big goal. Looks like we're shooting for a year now!!!

I'm just still in shock and so excited that we've made it this far. I knew in the beginning this would be a big commitment, although I didn't realize how big at the time. I also didn't realize the bond that my daughter and I would share. The thought of quitting brings me to tears...but hopefully we won't have to worry about that for another 6 months!!!

Christmas-time!!!!

I'm so excited for this Christmas!!! Last year we barely decorated and did good to get the tree up. If you know me, you know I like to go ALL OUT for Christmas and used to started decorating in November!!! So needless to say I'm VERY excited about decorating this year! I'm excited that I can eat all the food that I love...last year I did good to eat cheese toast! Most of all I'm excited to spend Christmas morning at our home with our wonderful daughter!! I know Kenley doesn't 'know' it's Christmas but she's noticing things and playing so I'm hoping she'll help unwrap her gifts.

I can't wait to see her little stocking hanging on the mantel. I can't wait to come down the stairs with her to the tree, fire and Christmas music. I can't wait to see her eyes light up when she sees the Christmas tree light up for the first time. I can't wait to snuggle with her on Christmas Eve. I can't wait to start our family Christmas traditions. Most of all, I can't wait to share the story of Jesus and His birth...the REAL reason for the season. She may not understand it yet, but she'll hear it. I can't wait. :O)

It's Christmas-time!!!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!

Sweet Potatoes!!

Well...we took the plunge and started sweet potatoes. Kenley hasn't been getting enough from just nursing and I didn't want to keep supplementing. I really wanted to wait until 6 months but my poor ba-boo was hungry. She was 5 months and 4 days when she took her first bite of food and I have to say...she loves it!!!! We started the sweet potatoes on Friday November 21 and have been doing 1-2 spoons at lunch since then.

Starting solids has been difficult for me. I struggled accepting that she wasn't getting enough breastmilk. Giving her solids, at first, seemed like I was failing at breastfeeding. (there have been some major tears during this time) It was also difficult to accept that she's growing up and moving to a new phase in her life. I'm doing much better with it now and I love that she's enjoying her new treat.

Here's a little video of her first sweet potatoes experience!!

5 months

Five months. That's how old Kenley is today. That just doesn't seem possible. My little baby is growing up so fast. She can roll, she's found her toes, she smiles, laughs, sticks out her tongue and she's very close to sitting up! We're fast approaching solids, but I think we'll wait one more month :o)

I cannot believe that she is one month shy of 6 months. It's going too fast. I wish I could slow down time...as I'm sure all parents do! It's been an amazing 5 months and I have loved it all. There have definitely been difficult moments. Moments of tears and uncertainty. Moments where I doubted my ability to be a mother. By God's grace and the support of friends and family we've made it. She's pushed me and challenged me and I hope that I'm a stronger person now because of her.

We 'celebrated' this evening by taking a mother/daughter nap in the recliner. Does life get better than this?!?! ;p

I miss my doodle-bug

Kenley was picked up by Nana (Jonathan's mom) this morning and won't be returning until tomorrow morning. I planned on using today to clean but sat around and rested instead. Seems I've caught myself another cold so I took advantage of the down time. While I enjoyed having the day 'off' I sure do miss my doodle.

It's amazing how much you miss your little one(s) when they're away. I miss snuggling with her, seeing her smile, giggling with her, nursing her (oh how I hate pumping in her absence), holding her hand, playing with her fabulously long hair...you get the idea.

I can't wait for tomorrow morning to get here so I can give my precious baby girl a big hug and kiss. :o)

Our Christmas Poems

Each Christmas, since we got married, I write a poem to sum up the past year. It is to the 'tune' of Twas the Night Before Christmas and I send it out with our Christmas cards. I can't wait to write this year's!!! Our first Christmas with Kenley!! I'm so excited.

I was about to start working on this year's poem and for fun I opened up our past 3. They're soooo super cheesy but I love them!

Here is the one from last year:
Twas the night before Christmas, with the ones we hold dear
we sat by our tree thinking about the past year
2007 was great, it had good times and bad
Here's a recap of some of the experiences we had!

In Charleston, SC we started our year
with a big group of friends we rang in 07 with a cheer!
Ash went back to school for a teaching degree
but then 2 months later decided it wasn't to be.

In April, off to Destin for a wedding and beach fun
we watched dear friends get married and laid out in the sun!
Ash shot her first wedding the beginning of May
then we headed to Huntsville for another friend's wedding day

Jonathan surprised Ashley with a birthday trip to the coast
(sure made turning 25 a little easier to toast!)
August brought HIGH temps and our 2nd Anniversary
the A/C died TWICE...the house was hot as could be!

With Jonathan's help, Zuby went full time in September
then we hoped on a plane for a trip to remember!
A week in Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay
Photoshop World for work then a couple days for play!!

Finally it was fall and October rolled around
Ashley and her mom were Disney World bound!
Zuby's awesome new website finally went live
Then God blessed us with a really big surprise!!

Our family of 6 will be 7 soon...
we're expecting our first baby on the 19th of June!
We're just tickled pink...or maybe it's blue
we'll find out in just a month or two!!!

As we look forward to the upcoming year
all of God's blessings are so perfectly clear.
From our family to yours, this Christmas season,
We wish you the best and remember Christ is the reason!!!

I didn't feel like doing a Christmas card picture last year so here we are Christmas morning in our matching pjs at my sister's house. I don't miss 'morning' sickness at all!!!

LOLZ

So the new thing is to add funny caption to pictures called LOLz. I was bored one night and had a little fun with some pictures of Kenley. Enjoy!! :o)

Little blessings have the biggest impacts!!

If you know us, you know that we have the worst luck with our heating and air system. On our 2nd wedding Anniversary (2007), our AC died. We were able to repair it but for a price of $1000. This year on our 3rd Anniversary, it died completely. That set us back $5500. While it was a difficult time, we knew that God was with us and that he will provide for us.

Well disaster struck again. This week it has been (according to me) unseasonably cold for October. Since we have a baby now, we were forced to turn on the heater. Normally Jonathan and I would bundle up and enjoy it. We like being cold. Well...looks like we got our wish, kinda. The furnace wasn't working.

The techs who installed our new AC unit and furnace came out 3 times to work on it. Nothing was working. The owner came out today and discovered our regulator was broken. That part is not covered under warranty. The bill for labor and parts...$150.

Now, $150 may not seem like a lot but it is right now, especially after spending a total of $6500 on our HVAC.

This is where God steps in in all His glory. As Jonathan was talking with the owner, the owner told him to tear up the bill. He said we had spent enough on this and he wasn't going to charge us. GOD IS AMAZING!!!! What a truly amazing blessing!

Meet the Flinstones!!!

Last night was our first Halloween party as a family. We chose to dress up as the Flinstones. I knew back in August that we would dress up as the Flinstones b/c Kenley has the perfect amount of hair for the Pebbles ponytail!!! (Back then it would stick up on it's own...these days it lays flat)

We had such a great time. The party was hosted by some dear friends for our Sunday school class. There was chili, dips, and lots of desserts. Our family even won Best Costume!!

Words we should learn from

“If an American is to amount to anything he must rely upon himself, and not upon the State; he must take pride in his own work, instead of sitting idle to envy the luck of others. He must face life with resolute courage, win victory if he can, and accept defeat if he must, without seeking to place on his fellow man a responsibility which is not theirs.” - Theodore Roosevelt
I wish this is what Americans still believed...things would be a lot better off.

Disney bound...a year ago today

Yep. That's right. A year ago today my mom and I were on our way to the magical world of Disney. It's a mother/daughter tradition that we started when I was in high school. Just mom and me running around Disney world. We have the best time.

Each year we stay at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort and coincidentally, in the Barbados building each time! We enjoy our walks to Old Port Royale where we can eat, shop, swim and listen to the tunes of the Caribbean. We love our resort! From there we hop on the Disney bus (a nice big air conditioned charter bus) and head to our park for the day. We take advantage of Disney's Fast Pass and have a rountine for our rides. Last year we tried a bunch of news things especially at Disney's Animal Kingdom. It was so much fun!!! I miss it terribly.

While we were at Magic Kingdom we came across a show called "Pirate Tutorial" starring Captian Jack Sparrow. Y'all...the guy playing Jack Sparrow was a dead ringer for the real deal. Mom and I watched that show probably 10 times during our 2 visits to Magic Kingdom. It was a funny show and man was he HOT. :o)

This trip was a little different than our previous trips. My stomach was hurting off and on. Nothing major...I was still able to have fun, it just made eating a little difficult. I thought it was the heat making me feel queezy. Turns out, I had a little stow away in my tummy that I didn't know about until after we got home! It was Kenley's 'first' trip to Disney!!!

I miss Disney...I can't wait to go back and share that experience with my daughter!! :o)

Why I love Thursdays

Thursdays are the day before Friday. The day before the weekend starts. The week is almost over...so Thursday's pretty much rock all on their own. What makes them even better is that they are also the night of my favorite shows!

From 1994-2004 it was Friends night. I will admit that the night the final Friends episode aired and I cried like a baby! It was the end of an era!! Now my Thursdays are reserved for The Office and Grey's Anatomy. Thursdays are exciting again!!

I can't wait until tonight...I'm such a nerd :o)

Kenley's Baptism Pics

Here are a few pics of the family gathered for Kenley's baptism that was on Oct. 5, 2008. Unfortunately my battery died in the middle of family shots so I'm still waiting to get those.

Our 3 year wedding anniversary

It was actually on August 6th but I'm finally getting the video uploaded. It's about 10 minutes...so if you're really bored it's a great way to kill some time!! :o)

Kenley finds her mirror

This mirror was a consignment sale find and she absolutely loves it!

Kenley's Giggle

Kenley's first on camera giggle!!

Yay! I finally ordered birth announcements!!

Almost 4 months after Kenley's arrival, her birth announcements have finally been ordered! I did something a little different than traditional announcements. All of the designs I liked were going to be pretty pricey. Since we're trying to work on our debt, we just don't have the $$ to spend on something most people will look at then throw away.

SO...I found some designs I liked and recreated them in Photoshop, then added my own touches. It literally took me a couple of months to narrow down the choices and pick THE announcement.

My original plan was to order 5x7's from snapfish then buy envelopes online, BUT I received an email recently that offered an even BETTER cost saving solution from Vistaprint. They are having all kinds of great sales right now...why didn't I think of them first?!?! We've ordered postcards from them in the past so I feel pretty confident ordering our announcements from them. I chose the oversized postcard option and found a coupon for 60% off! (The original email offer was for 50% but I looked around online some more and found the 60% off deal)

Here is the link (I don't know when it expires)
http://www.4officecoupons.com/vistaprint-coupons.html

So for 100 postcards, 100 envelopes, a small return address stamp and shipping, I only paid $33. I'm soooo pumped!! It feels GREAT to bargain shop AND finally get these things ordered!! :o)

My life verse

Many Christians have a 'life verse.' It's a verse that speaks to their heart, sums up their faith, is their daily guide, etc. Up until this weekend...I didn't really have a true 'life verse.'

My mom and I were running errands Saturday and one of our stops was at Hobby Lobby. They had a little display with baby items that I keep my eye on. One of the items was a little wooden cross with a Bible verse:

"My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him." Psalms 62:1

I made a mental note and tried to remember the verse for when I got home.

Later that evening Jonathan and I were working on Kenley's blessing for her baptism the next day. We were gathering some of our favorite verses and to my surprise, I actually remembered my Psalms verse. Something just kept pulling me to that verse and I really wanted to include it in Kenley's blessing.

Jonathan has always said my Faith is 'childlike' because I don't try to analyze or question the who's, what's, where's, when's, etc. of the Bible. God said He loves me. He sent His son to die for me so I wouldn't have to die for my sins. It is the truth and I fully believe it. John 3:16 says "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." It's just always been that simple for me.

So while we're sitting there it hits me. Psalms 62:1 is my life verse. It's simple. It's to the point. It's perfect!

I love this verse. There's no need to stress out about the current economic crisis. There's no need to worry about who is going to be elected next month. I find rest in God. Not in politics. Not in worldly possessions. Not in money. I find rest in God alone. My salvation is in Him and it brings me pure joy knowing this.

God's lesson in contentment

Jonathan has been asking me to get on board with Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover to get a handle on our debt for quite some time. I don't like dealing with our finances and often live in denial about money - I think a lot of us can be guilty of this! So needless to say...I really wasn't on board with a strict budget that forced us to make sacrifices. I wanted to continue to live in the now and not worry about our debt situation.

Apparently God has been trying to get me on board too...first in subtle ways then in more obvious ways. It started last December when we found out Andy needed ACL surgery. That was $800. I had recently quit my job to start my own business, we were not even 2 months into my pregnancy, and it was Christmas-time. We did not have $800.

Then in January we had a coupling burst on a pipe which caused a lot of water damage in our garage. Insurance covered it but there was a $500 deductible. Yet another blow.

Because of the pregnancy, we had some medical bills come up. Again insurance covered most but there's that deductible again. Our bill for Kenley was roughly $2500.

Then the biggest wake up call came as our 3 year wedding Anniversary gift. Jonathan and I had dinner at the Melting Pot...a very nice treat for us. As we all headed up the stairs to get ready for bed, we found water was coming out of the ceiling and the landing was soaked. Our air conditioner was leaking. The next day our AC tech confirmed our fear...we needed a new AC unit. After paying for a new AC unit and yet another insurance deductible, we were out $6000.

We both hit rock bottom. Our spirits were broken and we were defeated. We couldn't figure out why all this was happening. We both began praying and begging God for some assistance, some understanding, some relief...anything.

A couple of weeks later we were heading up to Nashville for a friend's wedding. As we were flipping through the stations, we came across Dave Ramsey's call in radio show. We listened through several callers, which is unusual for me as I usually request to change to music. Then "THE CALL" came in. The one I am convinced God had me in the exact place and time to hear. It was a couple who had followed D.R.'s plan and were finally debt free. They got to cheer "We're debt free!" and my heart instantly began to hurt.

God had been putting all of these situations in my life to get me on track and on board with getting out of debt. I had been irresponsible with my spending all these years and an unsupportive wife to my husband's requests to tackle our debt. God calls us to be good stewards of our money and I have been ignoring that for years. This call...this simple cheer of accomplishment grabbed hold of me and shook me to my core. THIS is what God has been trying to tell me..To WANT to get out of debt.

I looked at Jonathan and said "I want to be that caller one day." I'm tired of working to live. I'm tired of being in debt. I'm tired of that baggage that we carry. God had spoken to me loud and clear.

I am in no way a perfect person. I'm in no way a model Christian. I'm simply Ashley. I'm a sinner and I struggle everyday. I will struggle with the decision to be wise with my money everyday. I'm tempted by material items and the desire to 'nest.' I'm constantly praying for God to give me patience while we start our LONG and difficult journey to being debt free. I know God is teaching me that I need to be happy and content with what He has given me.

Happiness and joy cannot be found in riches or the material items of today. It is found in Jesus and our families and friends. It is being content and thankful for what you have. I do not and cannot find fulfillment in new furniture or new clothes. I do not and cannot find happiness in money. My happiness comes from the many blessings He has given me. My fulfillment comes from Him.

Almost 3 months...

Almost 3 months have passed since Kenley officially entered our lives. They say a baby changes everything and it's so true. It makes you know a love you've never know before. It makes you appreciate time with loved ones more. It makes you closer to your mother and sister and other woman who have experienced the miracle of birth. It makes you cherish and value the little things in life, like a smile and a giggle. Having a baby is the opportunity to see God and see His plan unfold right before your eyes. Having a baby means you just got to participate in creating a miracle.

When people ask me if I like being a mother, I suddenly notice that I'm smiling from ear to ear. Yes, I love it. God has blessed me with the most amazing and important role a woman can play. He allowed me to carry a human life inside of me and now He has entrusted me to help her grow. He gave us the most amazing baby and each day with her is new and amazing. How could I not like being a mother?! I absolutely love it!!

It is so hard to believe that almost 3 months have passed. They've gone by so quickly and I've tried to hold on to each moment. I knew healing from a c/section would be difficult but the emotional healing process after having a baby is one I did not prepare for, nor could I have predicted. I have days where I miss being pregnant. I miss feeling that new perfect life moving. I miss the anticipation of her arrival. I miss the excitement of those first couple of days after she was born. I've forgotten the pain and discomfort I felt when I was at my largest. Forgotten the pain of healing from surgery. Forgotten the nausea in the beginning. All that occupies my memory is the excitement and anticipation that our daughter was on her way. Isn't amazing how God can let you 'forget' those things that at one point made you miserable? He truly is amazing and I cannot wait to do it all over again! Maybe minus the nausea! ;p

Three months go by too quickly...but they have been the most amazing months in my life!

Latest update on baby girl

Today we had our 36wk appt. Everything looked good. Baby girl is measuring 2 wks ahead and weighed in at an estimated 7lbs 11oz!!! We got to see her on the 4-D and saw her cheeks...they're nice and chubby!!! Unfortunately she had her face covered with her arm so we couldn't see much...but what we did see was precious!!

Please keep us in your prayers that she will come on her own...if I'm not showing any progress in 2 weeks, doc wants to discuss c/s possibilities. Yikes!! Not too worried yet...there's still plenty of time for me to go into labor and her weight is just an estimate.

Bottom line, no matter when/how she gets here...she looks healthy and we're both doing well!! Jonathan and I are SOOOOO eager to get her here!! Come on baby girl!!!!

Funny trip to L&D

Jonathan and I finished our last parenting class Tuesday (5/20) and wanted to stop by and visit our friend who had her baby on Monday. We walk up the the nurses station and they asked me my name and asked me to sign in. I'm an idiot and think they make visitors do this, Jonathan catches on that they think I'm checking in to have the baby!

So we laugh and I explain that no, I'm not in labor and I'm just here to visit. The nurses all look shocked, ask when I'm due and again are shocked that I'm not there to have my baby. So...even the nurses think I'm about to pop my baby out at any moment.

As we left to see our friend, I said "I hope to see yall soon for the real thing!"

Baby girl update

Still no name...but baby girl is growing and doing well! At our last appt. we continued to measure ahead so doc has ordered a growth ultrasound. I can't wait to see her again!!!!! Jonathan and I were both long babies...SO I'm hoping she's BIG in the length and not in the weight!

Those who see me in person are always shocked at how much longer I have left b/c of the sheer size of my belly. She is poking straight out and I often wonder just how much bigger 1 baby can get! My mom keeps asking me if they're sure there's just one...sometimes I wonder the SAME thing!! At 32 weeks, my belly was measuring 48" around. Yep...I am now 4' around. NEVER thought I'd say that about myself!

Tomorrow we have our prenatal appt with baby girl's pediatrician. I'm a little nervous and weirded out by this. A pediatrician...it just keeps more and more real! :o)

OH and tomorrow, May 8th, I will be 34 weeks. Only 6 more weeks until my due date. It just doesn't seem possible!!! :o)

BIG milestone!!

Back in February I hit a big milestone. I've managed to keep a plant alive for 2 years!

Background:
I am SO bad at keeping plants alive, that I don't even have a 'thumb.' You hear of green thumbs and black thumbs, I'm no thumbs. I have managed to kill cactus and bamboo. Both VERY durable until left in my care.

So back in Feb of 06, a good friend of ours brought me a housewarming plant. I thought...poor think doesn't stand a chance.

Here we are over 2 years later and said plant is alive and well!! I'm honestly shocked!! I currently have 2 living plants in our house...I think the other is coming up on it's 2 year anniversary and it's doing really well. It still amazes me most days that they are both still living and when I see new little baby leaves, I get really excited!

Next step...Azaleas in the front yard. GULP. We'll see how this goes :o)

Car seat update!

Well we decided to go with the Graco Rittenhouse. It matches our stroller and hopefully will hide stains fairly well. I placed the order today...kinda weird and scary!!! :o)

Monday, April 14, 2008

Which car seat?!?!?!

There are4 car seats that I really like. All 4 are Graco. The Rittenhouse (black and white) matches our stroller BUT we don't really plan on using it with the stroller so it almost doesn't matter.

I of course LOVE the pink ones...I love the Rittenhouse too and the Platinum is just kinda practical. Help me decide!!!

Wall letter update

So here's what I have done so far:

I still have a lot of detail to put on there and the letters. Once we pick out the name, I can paint the letters...but I can go ahead and do the 'y' and 'l' :o)

Ideas for wall letters

So I want to paint her wall letters and here are some ideas. I will use different shades of pink and green with splashes of white. Haven't decided on a pattern yet. It will spell out her name...which we've narrowed down to 2 choices.  I'm thinking I'll get 6 little canvases...between the sizes of 5x7 and 8x10. Haven't decided yet but I can't wait to get started!!! :o)

Our glider!!!!

We found our rocker!!! It's the Sona by Best Chairs and it's sooo comfortable! The wood will be Espresso and the fabric will probably be a fun green that matches the bedding or something beige.

Birth Announcements

So I thought I would save some money and design my own announcements and then print them off on snapfish. I've worked up a few designs (don't be too impressed, I had inspiration) Still not in love with just one so I'm going to keep working. Here are the ones I've done so far (Kenley has not been decided on...just using it as an example) :o)

Our new stroller!!

While my mother-in-law was helping me with the nursery bedding and fabrics...my mom was in ATL scouting out strollers and found an awesome stroller that she got for us. I'm sooo excited!! I LOVE the toile pattern and I can't wait to push our sweet little girl in her new stroller!! Yay mom!!!!

Nursery Progress

Today my mother-in-law and I hit the town in search of fabric and nursery ideas. I ended up going with my FAVORITE bumper from Pottery Barn Kids...the 'Katie' line in pink!! It's on order and should be here soon!!! Next task...finding coordinating fabrics for bed skirt, window treatments and accessories. We decided not to worry about a toddler quilt for several reasons A) she really won't be able to use it B) she's probably going to get a ton of blankets and C) we're going to get the full/queen matching quilt for her future big girl bed!!

As soon as the bumper comes in, I can pick out paint! WOO HOO!!!! The furniture will be dark cherry and we're going to add chair railing around the room. I can't wait!!!

Below are the pics of the bumper and one of the coordinating fabrics for the room. We still have to find some solid pink and green material but we'll wait for the bumper to come in. The polka dot fabric will be a little accent for the window treatments, the toy bag, and possibly an accent for the bed skirt. I'll post more as we get things done!! I can't wait for it all to come together!!

Whether or not to go back to short hair

I need a change...as if a baby bump isn't enough, so I'm cutting my hair today. Here's what I want to go back to length-wise:

Baby Girl :o)

Pictures of baby girl from our BIG Ultrasound!!

It's a girl!!!!

Mr. Southern and I had our big ultrasound Feb 7th and found out we have a healthy baby girl!! I think we were both a little surprise to hear 'girl' but couldn't be more excited!!! Still working on nursery ideas...I know the colors I want so hopefully we'll get a concrete plan soon.

We bought her first outfit shortly after the ultrasound. It is planned to be the coming home outfit...so far I haven't found anything I like better. :o)

I can't wait to meet her and hold her!!! Hurry up June!!!!!
